Maximo Matos of New Windsor, and Roger Way of Valley Central, second year students in the Vehicle Maintenance Program at the Orange-Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) recently competed in the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association (GNYADA) Regional Skills competition held at the Center for Automotive Education and Training Whitestone, New York. Matos and Way, working as a team, took third place in the hands-on competition that featured a vehicle diagnosis performed on a 2010 Toyota Corolla. They had to diagnose and repair problems that were specifically developed for the competition by Toyota Factory Specialists. The team's knowledge and skill in safety and eight areas of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), including Brakes, Suspension & Steering and Engine Repair, were put to the test in a hands-on, timed competition. For their winning effort, Maximo and Roger were awarded trophies and a $5,000 scholarship to Lincoln Technical Institute as well as scholarships to other technical schools.

Both students trained for months at Johnston's Toyota in Middletown as well as in the state-of-the-art Vehicle Maintenance shop at CTEC. Johnston's Toyota is highly supportive of the Automotive Programs at Orange-Ulster BOCES CTEC, and provided training on the specific model used in the competition.

Maximo and Roger are CTEC Honor Roll students. Maximo was inducted into the Orange-Ulster BOCES chapter of the National Technical Honor Society last year, and he will represent CTEC in this year's SKILLS USA competition in Syracuse. Joe Dolan is the CTEC Vehicle Maintenance Instructor for these talented young men.
