Students in the Orange-Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC)’s Visual Arts Academy participated in a poster contest among their peers at CTEC to observe the 36th annual Great American Smoke Out. This is the 18th year that students in Visual Arts Careers Academy have taken part in a poster-designing contest sponsored by the Orange County Department of Health and POW’R Against Tobacco.
The theme of this year's contest was If Tobacco Ads told the Truth. The theme is intended to encourage consumers to be aware of how tobacco ads do not tell the entire story and know that actual advertisements may not include all the risks involved with using their product.
The contest’s goal each year is to help students’ combat tobacco advertising through the creation of unique artwork. The Orange County Health Department uses the winning poster in its anti-smoking campaigns throughout the year.
Caitlin Klingle of Warwick was the first place winner (poster above), second place went to Tamara DelBoccio of Marlboro (poster below left), and third place was Gina Hendry of Warwick (poster below right).
The students created the posters under the direction of their instructors Mr. Derek Diaz
and Mrs. Madeline Lennon.
