Orange-Ulster BOCES Students Win NYS Association of Traffic Safety Boards “Save Your Friend’s Life Over the Airwaves” Contest

On Friday, June 5, 2009, the Orange-Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Education Center’s (CTEC) Transportation Academy hosted its tenth annual custom car exhibit and demonstration which is made possible each year through the generosity and partnership of the Tri-State Car Club, Inc.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of an award and $200 scholarship to Patrick Sandak of Tuxedo, a student in the BOCES GO (Graduation Option) Program in Chester and CTEC’s Auto Technology class, who won first place in the New York State Association of Traffic Safety Boards’ “Save Your Friend’s Life Over the Airwaves” contest. Patrick created a radio public service announcement (PSA) persuading teens to make life-saving choices to prevent injuries or deaths due to car crashes. His spot took first in New York State in the Aggressive Driving category and will be aired as a PSA on radio stations across New York State. First-place winners were selected in eight categories from 172 radio commercials submitted by NYS high school students. Evan Finnell of Monroe-Woodbury and a student in Auto Tech won an honorable mention and $75 in the contest, also in the Aggressive Driving category.
Orange
County Executive Edward Diana, Deputy Commissioner of Orange County
Department of Emergency Services Craig Cherry, and John Jones from
Orange County STOP DWI were on hand to present the awards to Patrick
and Evan. STOP
DWI also distributed information and give-aways to promote safe teen
driving.
The CTEC Car Show provides a great opportunity for all BOCES students and staff to view examples of automotive artistry and technology “up close and standing still.”
