High School Enrichment Highlights

Throughout the school year the enrichment program provides special presentations and stimulating experiences for academically talented senior students. Approximately nine events are planned, some of which feature guest speakers on various topics such as performing arts, interpersonal skills, and self-actualization.

The year commences with an orientation program where students are introduced to group and leadership dynamics through structured interactive experiences. The High School Enrichment Program may also include excursions for students to experience the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Broadway show and Storm King Art Center. One of the outstanding experiences that the students will enjoy is an all day theater workshop held with the Roundabout Theater Company at the American Airlines Theater on 42nd Street. In the morning the students, in small groups, work with a variety of theater staff, including, actors, lighting and sound technicians, set creators and others, as they analyze various scenes from the show they will be seeing later in the day. Each group is asked to interpret the scene and then to create the setting that they feel would be appropriate for the staging. This experience gives these students new ways to look at and interpret literature and music and their finished products are awe inspiring, considering the limited time that they have to actually stage their scene. In the afternoon, the students attend the performance of the show, and get to see how the professionals interpreted the scene for Broadway. Students have the opportunity to interact with Mykee Fowlin as he raises their awareness of cultural diversity in his award winning program. They have also experienced a look at military strategy through the eyes of a West Point instructor and how this strategy can be easily applied to their lives as they prepare to move on to pursue higher education and the careers that they lead to.
