TEACHERS 
The
Orange-Ulster Board of Cooperative Educational Services provides an instructional
service to the component districts through the use of shared teachers. This
program provides teachers and administrators with support services, which enhance
and upgrade educational programs. All services are operated in accordance with
Education Law and Commissioners Regulations. At present, BOCES is offering shared
professional services in the following areas:
In a single district, the maximum share of the service listed above is equivalent to 60% of full time or three days per week. There is no maximum share of service for Teachers of the Blind and Visually Impaired and English as a Second Language. Each position is shared among two or more districts and is full time for the ten month school year, unless otherwise identified.
Programs of service to pupils with limited English proficiency are eligible for LEP aid and are not eligible for BOCES aid. Programs of services to Blind and Visually Impaired students are eligible for excess cost aid and are not eligible for BOCES aid.
This service is available to component school districts upon application.
Charges for these services will be based on FTEs. Costs of supervision, salary, fringe benefits, travel, staff development, and teacher supplies and materials where applicable are pooled and charged proportionately to each district based on the amount of service provided.
Shared services to visually impaired students include direct instruction, consultation, ordering adaptive items, liaison with state agencies and organizations, and coordination of services to meet the individual student’s special needs. BVI teachers provide teachers and administrators with support services, which facilitate the mainstream process for children with visual handicaps. BVI teachers provide educational and functional vision evaluations, as well as plan and implement IEP’s in conjunction with the local district’s Committee for Special Education.
Students who have experienced a hearing loss receive services of a shared staff teacher of the Deaf and Hearing Handicapped. These teachers provide direct service to the students, consultation to regular classroom teachers and/or teaching teams. Deaf and Hearing Handicapped teachers also teach and interact with the student’s adaptive equipment.
The shared ELL Teacher provides instruction to individual students as well as groups in English as a Second Language. This is developed through assessment, teaching and re-assessment in short concise lessons, stressing the use of the English language.
A shared Nurse Practitioner is a registered professional nurse who provides a wide range of health care services to clients. Nurse Practitioners are skilled in physical examination and the treatment and management of many common health problems, both acute and chronic. Nurse Practitioners work in collaboration with a qualified school physician.
In compliance with the New York State health appraisal guidelines, a Nurse Practitioner can perform the state mandated student physical examinations for: Students entering a school district for the first time; grades K, 1, 3, 7, and 10; sports clearance; special education; and CSE referrals. After examining a student the Nurse Practitioner can make referrals for occupational, physical, and/or speech therapy evaluations. Based upon need indicated in evaluation report, the Nurse Practitioner can then authorize a treatment plan. The Nurse Practitioner can also serve as a school health consultant to school nurses, teachers, and administrators. Staff and employee physical examinations can also be done by the Nurse Practitioner.
