Orange-Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) hosted a reveal for Including Communities student, David Castellanos, from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. The CTE Build Team worked diligently on a Magic Wheelchair for David throughout the course of the year.
Magic Wheelchair is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating custom costumes for children in wheelchairs. Dani Masterson, a volunteer for Magic Wheelchair, shared: "Our mission is to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to experience magic in their lives, and events like this at Orange-Ulster BOCES demonstrate the incredible impact of community service and compassion."
The project began with Digital Film students interviewing David to get to know him and understand his interests and hobbies. Then the Build Team went to work. Construction students carefully measured David's wheelchair and fittings. Carpentry student Chase Porter, Warwick Valley High School shared: “The Magic Wheelchair project was born for us in the Construction Academy class. It wasn't just about building a wheelchair; it was about creating a dream for my new friend, David. This project challenged us to think outside the box, pushed the boundaries of what we thought we could make, and poured our hearts and souls into every intricate detail.”
The next phase of the project was mock-up and design. Fashion and Digital Design students infused custom details and artwork inspired by David's passions, including elements of the Lakers basketball team and Marvel superheroes. Throughout the year-long endeavor, the Digital Film team captured every step of the process, culminating in the final unveiling.
After a countdown with wands raised in the audience, the magic was revealed highlighting the craftsmanship and creativity of the Career and Technical Education Build Team in their one-of-a-kind design for David.
Reveal attendees were touched to witness David’s excitement as he saw his Magic Wheelchair for the first time. It was a special moment that will be remembered fondly in the hearts of all who attended.
