On Friday May 12, 2023, the students of Orange-Ulster BOCES CTE Fire Science program participated in Live Burn Day. This is a component of the New York State Interior Firefighting Operations (IFO) Certification, which students in the course have the opportunity to partake in to receive this certification from The Office of Fire Prevention & Control.
This certification allows students the ability to operate as Interior Structural firefighters. During the day, students participate in learning to extinguish three live fires, vent, enter, and search of the building, as well as other techniques and operations essential to firefighting.
We would like to thank the Orange County Fire Training Center for the continued support and use of the fire training facility throughout the year. With this partnership, students are afforded the ability to complete this certification as well the Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (BEFO) Certification and others.
With the support from Orange County Manager/ Training Coordinator, Chief of Training James McMann, OU BOCES has been able to offer students this unique program to high school students for over a decade. On scene for Live Burn Day was Chief of Emergency Services of Orange County, Deputy Commissioner Vini Tankasali.
Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps (GOVAC) was also on scene to support students. OU BOCES has garnered support from many of our local fire and emergency service agencies over the years, building strong partnerships that create amazing opportunities for our students.
