A woman writing at a desk,

March 9 - the birthday of pioneering educator Amy Bull Crist - has been officially designated as Amy Bull Crist Day at Orange-Ulster BOCES, honoring a woman whose historic ties to Orange County and visionary leadership helped shape the region’s educational landscape.

Amy, born March 9, 1906, was a seventh-generation member of the prominent Bull family, whose ancestors were among Orange County’s earliest settlers. She passed away on May 20, 1995.

Throughout her life, she was a steadfast advocate for expanding educational opportunities and strengthening community institutions. A true champion of public education, Amy helped found Orange-Ulster BOCES, SUNY Orange, and Occupations, Inc.. She went on to serve as OUB's first district superintendent, a role she held with distinction for 34 years. In recognition of her extraordinary leadership, the Gibson Road campus in Goshen was named the “Amy Bull Crist Area Education Center.”

Beyond her contributions to education, Amy was deeply committed to preserving local history. She played an instrumental role in establishing Friends of Hill-Hold and Brick House and was a dedicated supporter of the Goshen Historic Track.

Amy Bull Crist Day was established by a vote of the OUB Board of Education in 2023. Celebrated annually on her birthday, the day recognizes her lasting contributions, unwavering dedication, and her transformative legacy.

OUB Chief Operating Officer Deborah McBride Heppes invites anyone who has a memory or story about Amy to share to contact her at 845-291-0110.
