High School Scholar Athletes Honored at OCIAA Senior Scholar Athlete Ceremony

High school seniors who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and the athletic arena were honored on Wednesday, June 2,  at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony held at the Goshen High School Coliseum. The event was attended by honorees, their families, school district personnel, members of the OCIAA Executive Committee and government officials. 

The keynote speaker for the event was Edwin A. Estrada, a vice president at Orange Bank & Trust Company. Estrada was an outstanding track and field athlete at Middletown High School and was Middletown’s male scholar athlete in 1984. He is a current Board Member for Orange-Ulster BOCES and was on the Middletown Board of Education for 13 years.

In his speech, Estrada, talked about the importance of perseverance, community service and being yourself by using examples from his life and his family. He delivered the speech from the stands to be closer to the honorees.

William J. Hecht, Orange-Ulster BOCES Chief Operating Officer and OCIAA Athletic Coordinator Christopher P. Mayo also spoke at the ceremony. The master of ceremonies was Michael Kroemer, Cornwall Central High School Athletic Director.  Monroe-Woodbury won the OCIAA Community Service Challenge Award, and Leon Vincente (Middletown HS) was the recipient of the Tyler Muise Award.

The OCIAA Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony was coordinated by the Orange-Ulster BOCES Athletic Coordinator’s Office, which is part of a BOCES cooperative service offered to school districts. The office serves the needs of the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA), the Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) and Section IX Athletic Council. In addition to coordinating the event, some of the office’s many functions include scheduling interscholastic athletics, scheduling and paying officials, providing in-service courses for coaches, conducting championship contests, maintaining a website for athletic scheduling, and mentoring athletic directors.
