OUB’s Jill Henry to be Honored May 6 with Mid-Hudson School Study Council Award

Jill Henry, special education teacher in our STRIVE Program, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Mid-Hudson School Study Council Award for Teacher Excellence!

This prestigious honor recognizes educators and school professionals who go above and beyond in their commitment to students and their craft. Award recipients are nominated by their administrators for their innovative instructional practices, leadership and profound impact on student success.

“Jill always says we are a team, and I do not think you could find a better leader than Jill,” said Jill’s “other half,” paraprofessional Michelle Gardiner, who has worked with Jill in her classroom for years.

“Her patience is legendary, but it is her clinical precision and deep empathy that truly set her apart,” Chief Operating Officer Deborah McBride Heppes said in her letter of nomination. “She doesn’t just teach curriculum, she unlocks the world for her students.”

Jill started at OUB as a 16-year-old volunteer and was a para-educator before becoming a special education teacher.

“I truly found my passion here,” said Jill. “I know it’s cliche but I learn more from my students than I could ever teach. Here, I’ve learned that everything can be truly incredible.”

Jill and the other honorees will be feted at an awards event on May 6 at the North Rockland Central School District's Fieldstone Auditorium.
