Orange-Ulster BOCES held its annual spelling bee on March 21, 2024. Eli McNair, an eighth grader grade who attends South Middle School in the Newburgh School District, became the first place winner of this year’s spelling bee is sponsored by the Orange County School Boards Association and the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. As part of this sponsorship, Eli will represent Orange County in the national bee.
As a result of winning the Regional Spelling Bee, Elie will compete on the national level at the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held in the Washington, D.C. area from May 26 through May 31, 2024. Eli will also receive subscriptions to Britannica Online and Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as well as the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award.
Nolan Ensall, an eighth grader from C.J. Hooker Middle School in the Goshen School District, was finished in second place. Kaelani Curbelo, an eighth grader from Washingtonville Middle School, took third .
