Lighting Up History with America 250 Candle Making

Orange-Ulster BOCES Summer Enrichment celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of America included hands-on candle-making workshops for students in grades 1-5 from across our regional schools.

Participants learned about traditional colonial craftsmanship, resourcefulness, and daily life in colonial America while creating their own candles. The students chose their own pigments and scents to customize their creations. Then, they compared modern candle-making methods with those of the 1700s. To further enhance the experience, OUB America 250 activity books, designed to teach key historical concepts, were distributed. The event provided an engaging learning experience that brought early American history to life for students.

Summer Enrichment America 250 workshops also include colonial soap making, which will be offered in August.
