This program provides opportunities beyond the traditional classroom to enrich the total learning experience for high school seniors. Students learn teamwork, leadership skills, appreciation of diversity as well as an understanding of complex organizational structures and cultural events that they would not otherwise access in a typical high school environment.
Participants are engaged in monthly activities that have a theme for exploration. The program begins with students meeting with their counterparts from various other schools and participating in mixed grouping and project adventure activities under the theme of Team Building/Leadership. The school year themes continue with activities such as: Sight & Sound: Cultural Diversity, Art in Motion, Civic Rights and Responsibilities, Group Cooperation, Popular Theater, and Hudson Valley Art and Culture.
Activities include trips to cultural events, presentations and panel discussions. Excursions may include New York City cultural events and areas of local interest where students are introduced to a variety of art forms including theater and nationally-renowned museums. Each district provides an advisor, whose role is to prepare the students for each of the planned activities. It is also this advisor’s responsibility to chaperone the students during the events as well as to communicate to parents all information related to this program.
Admission:
Each district has the opportunity to select those academically talented students that meet district established criteria, with class ranking being the most common. Students selected for this program must make the commitment to attend all of the planned activities throughout the year. If a student cannot attend an event, it is suggested that the district have a list of alternates who could be available.
Cost Formula:
There is a per pupil fee for participation.

- This program provides opportunities beyond the traditional classroom to enrich the total learning experience for students in grades K-12. The program is highly flexible and responsive to individual districts' requests for enrichment opportunities both in the classroom and place-based field trip learning experiences. For example, while a class is studying the Revolutionary War, students may have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to Washington's Headquarters or Knox Headquarters in Newburgh. To enhance STEM learning, trips to the Liberty Science Center and other such places are coordinated by OU BOCES. Excursions may also include New York City cultural events and areas of local interest where students are introduced to a variety of art forms including theater and nationally renowned museums. To supplement classroom-based curricula, OU BOCES will arrange for various programs such as The Museum of the Hudson Highlands to visit classrooms to facilitate presentations on a wide variety of science topics. These classroom curricula expansion opportunities can be tailored for any grade level. District requests can include a specific field trip destination or in-class program. If you would like suggestions, BOCES will research and make recommendations for topic-related destinations and programs. We will coordinate the enrichment experience from start to finish.
