Those interested in the Practical Nurse program must complete ALL aspects of the application process no later than Friday, May 20, 2022 to be considered for a seat in the September 2022 program. Don't delay!
The 2022-2023 admission process information sessions will be conducted online and are required. The slideshows can be viewed at the candidate’s convenience. Prospective students must access and view the Program Information Session Slideshow as well as the Financial Aid Information Slideshow.
- The PN admissions application process will begin December 20th and has a deadline of May 20, 2022 to be considered for enrollment in the September 2022 class.
- ALL candidates must complete all steps of the admission process by the May 20 deadline.
- Applicants will be notified of the acceptance decision by the team leader or designee.
Steps to the path of Practical Nurse:
Step 1:
View the Program Information Session Slideshow and the Financial Aid Information Session Slideshow.
Step 2:
Complete the Google Form questions to verify you viewed both slideshows.
- The Google form questionnaire must be completed as a mandatory part of the admission process. The questions include information from both slideshows. If there are any questions, the contact information for the program and financial aid are listed in the slideshows.
Step 3:
Study for the TEAS, which is the entrance exam.
- Studying for the TEAS exam is strongly recommended.
- ATI has study resources and practice tests available for purchase by the individual candidate (at their own expense) through ATI TEAS® which can be accessed through the ATI Testing website.
- There is a cost for the TEAS exam that is paid directly to ATI, the test vendor. Cost of the test is the responsibility of the candidate.
Step 4:
Schedule and complete the ATI TEAS Entrance Exam which can be accessed through the ATI Testing website. This exam is done remotely and is proctored by ATI. The non-refundable fee for the TEAS is paid to ATI, by credit or debit at the time of registration.
- The candidate must inform ATI to send their official TEAS score to Orange-Ulster BOCES Practical Nurse Program. Only official scores from ATI will be accepted.
- To be eligible for acceptance you must attain qualifying TEAS scores:
- Overall minimum score of Basic or Proficient with a 65% in reading the candidate has their choice of program available (rubric score also applies).
- Overall minimum score of Basic with a 60% in reading the candidate can apply for the part-time program.
- An overall score of Developing is not a passing score.
- The exam is valid for one year from the date the test is taken and passed.
- The TEAS exam can only be taken twice per enrollment period and there must be a minimum of 30 days in between the initial test and the retest.
Step 5:
Once #1, 2 & 4 are completed the student may complete an entrance application, entrance essay, and obtain two professional references (forms provided are used for rubric scores).
- Complete the Application Form.
- Download and submit the HIPAA and Confidentiality Form. Completed forms are to be scanned and submitted via email to Mrs. McQuade at lisa.mcquade@ouboces.org. Pictures of the forms will not be accepted.
- Download the Professional Reference Form to be used for your professional references. References are to be submitted to the OU BOCES Practical Nurse Program by mail:

Step 6:
After #1, 2, 4 & 5 are completed, the candidate will be scheduled for an interview. The interview may be remote or in person.
A $100 non-refundable application fee is required when scheduled for the interview.
- Admission to the Practical Nurse program is a competitive process. A rubric will be used to determine placement in the program. Completion of the requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
- Applicants not accepted must reapply to be considered for admission the following year.
