Practical Nurse Program

The practical nursing program is an intensive program consisting of 12 courses of study. Clinical rotations enhance the theory portion and occur in a variety of health care settings, including inpatient and outpatient settings. Employment opportunities include hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, physicians’ offices and home health agencies.
The program adheres to NYS approved curriculum and is approved for 1,104 hours of instruction. Successful course completion is required to be eligible to sit for the Practical Nursing State Board exam.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
PRACTICAL NURSE PROGRAM
Full-Time: September-June. The schedule is full-time, Mon-Fri, 8 a.m – 3 p.m. with two clinical day sessions per week.
Part-Time: September-June for 20 months (two academic years). Classes are four days per week with one full day, 8 a.m – 3 p.m. and three half days (8-11 a.m. or 1-3 p.m.) The full day will turn into the part-time program's clinical day.
The clinical calendar is subject to change. This course is taught on-campus.
LICENSURE PREPARATION
The PN 10-month course prepares students for the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for the Professions) in New York State.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Federal Student Aid is available. This program is approved for agency-funded financial assistance from the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs, ACCES-VR, 1199 SEIU, CSEA, and HESC.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and a high school graduate. Transfer of college credits and college entrance scores are not accepted. College education from prior programs of study is not transferable.
All applicants (including re-admissions) are required to:
- Attend an information session
- Pass the ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills)
- Participate in an interview
- Pay fees and tuition

REGISTER FOR THE ATI TEAS EXAM AND PASS THE ENTRANCE EXAM
All applicants must pass the ATI TEAS exam. The test can be scheduled no more than three weeks in advance.
How to Register for a Proctored Remote Exam through ATI:
- Visit https://www.atitesting.com/teas/register. A popup will ask why you're on the site. Select "I am preparing for or taking the TEAS."
- You'll be redirected. Click "Create an Account" in the upper right. Select Orange-Ulster BOCES for your institution when creating your account.
- Once you've created and signed into your account, select "Online Store" in the upper right.
- You'll be redirected to a new page with a menu on the left. Under "Register for..." select “TEAS at ATI."
- Select program type: "ATI Remote Proctor- Nursing."
- There are typically several pages of dates.
- Click "Learn More" to see the details for the remote testing site and the technology required to take the test from home.
- Click "Register" to select a date and time.
- The non-refundable $115 fee for the TEAS is paid to ATI, by credit or debit, at the time of registration.

Prospective PN students may decide to take their exam remotely, at home or at the Newburgh Learning Center computer lab, which provides the technology needed and a quiet environment.

EXAM DAY
Arrive and/or log in by 8:45 a.m. Registered applicants must provide a copy of payment receipt and photo ID. Carefully read the email instructions to prepare for the entrance exam.
The ATI TEAS is a timed exam that consists of four sections: Reading Comprehension, Science, English and Math. An online calculator is available. Calculators, cell phone, tablets, and Chromebooks are not permitted. A laptop or desktop computer with a web camera and internet service are required for remote ATI exams.
Applicants must pass the exam on their test date. An overall score of BASIC must be achieved. Additionally, the minimum Reading Comprehension score is 65 percent for those applying for the full-time program and 60 percent for those applying for the part-time program.
If the applicant does not meet the required scores they are encouraged to remediate through adult education literacy classes or another source (such as ATI) and retest. Applicants can take the exam twice for the program year in which they are applying, and retests must be at least 30 days apart. ATI TEAS exam scores expire one year after the exam date.

Upon receiving your passing exam results, complete the application form and pay the $100 non-refundable application fee.

YOUR INTERVIEW
After passing the entrance exam, applicants must participate in an 30-40 minute interview with the program coordinator. The interview can be in-person or virtual. Please arrive 10 minutes early.
The following documents must be submitted, either in a PDF format through the U.S. mail (photos of documents are not allowed):
- A completed program application (view/download Practical Nurse Program application)
- A copy of the applicant's ID (driver license preferred)
- A copy of the applicant's social security card (required for NCLEX exam)
- Two professional references (view/download references form)
- Proof of high school education. Submit one of the following:
Official high school transcript (envelope must be sealed)
Official GED/TASC certificate with transcript
Official college transcript showing graduation date and degree
Foreign high school or college credential that has been translated and evaluated for meeting NYS high school graduation standards.
Interview dates are subject to change and applicants will receive notification by email or phone. An applicant may change their interview date once with 24 hour advance notice. E-mail appointment changes to PN@ouboces.org.
ACCEPTANCE LETTER
Upon acceptance, a $900 non-refundable registration deposit is due.
Successful applicants will receive an Acceptance Letter through email according to the scheduled dates of distribution. Applicants must carefully follow instructions and meet the deadline dates for admissions. Failure to meet these requirements may result in removing the applicant from the class roster.

- Complete a physical or submit a current physical that states the applicant can participate in the program without restrictions. (View/download the physical form).
- Return the medical form, signed by a physician. Be sure the office stamps the physical form for verification.
- Pay the program fees on time.
- The school forms will be attached to the acceptance letter. Additional copies are available at the Practical Nurse office.
EARLY ADMISSIONS
If you have been accepted into the practical nurse program during the period of March through June, you are expected to complete your paperwork by July 1. Failure to meet the deadline may put your application on hold and place you on a waiting list for the next available seat. Applications are not carried over to the following year.

Refunds
Refund Policy for students who withdraw on or before the first day of class:
If fees are collected in advance of the start date of class and the student decides to drop this program before the first day of class, OUB will return what has been paid minus the non-refundable deposit and application fee. A student’s early withdrawal must be submitted in writing to the Practical Nurse Program office no later than the first day of class.
Tuition refunds, when due, will be made upon written request from the student. Administrative fees are not refundable.
The Federal Student Aid Title IV Refund Policy and Procedures will be followed as mandated by Federal Law. Contact the Program Office at 845-781-6715, Ext. 10800 for further details of the refund policy of Federal Student Aid and R2T4 calculation.
A student who withdraws or is dismissed at any time during or after the first scheduled class meeting shall be entitled to a refund as provided below:
- Within the first week of the program, full refund of all tuition paid, less the non-refundable application fee and deposit.
- During the second week of the program, 70 percent refund of tuition, less the non-refundable application fee and deposit
- After the second week of the program, no refund will be made; student is responsible for any and all remaining tuition and fees
Refunds for Cancellation by OUB
If tuition and fees are collected in advance of the start date of the Practical Nurse Program, and OUB cancels the class, 100 percent of the tuition and fees collected in advance will be refunded within 45 days of the planned start date.
PELL GRANTs | FEDERAL DIRECT STUDENT LOANS
Here is a step-by-step guide the the financial aid process.
1. Gather Documents to Complete FAFSA
You will need the following documents to complete your financial aid application:
- Your Social Security Number
- Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
2. Create a FSA ID
Visit https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/account-info to create FSA ID and password. Retain this information for future reference.
3. Complete a Financial Aid Application:

- First-time applying, click on “Start Here”

- Read and follow instructions carefully

IMPORTANT to know
- Parents must create their own FSA ID and password to enter their income information and sign their student’s application.
- Parents are also required to enter their tax information if the student is considered as a dependent applicant.
- Proof of parent’s or student’s spouse’s income may be required for verification.
- A parent must sign the FAFSA application.

5. Verification

6. Entrance Counseling Session
Be prepared to complete an online entrance counseling session with your FSA ID and password for Federal Direct Student Loans. This will include signing a Master Promissory Note if you wish to borrow federal loans.
