About the program:
The Practical Nurse program can provide many opportunities for employment: hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, physicians’ offices or home health agencies. The program adheres to NYS approved curriculum. The Orange-Ulster BOCES PN Program is approved for 1104 hours of instruction. Successful course completion is required to be eligible to sit for the Practical Nursing State Board exam. Admission to the PN program is competitive.
The practical nursing program is an intensive program consisting of twelve courses of study. Clinical rotations enhance the theory portion and occur in a variety of health care settings, including inpatient and outpatient settings.

Step 1: ATTEND AN INFORMATION SESSION
PRACTICAL NURSE PROGRAM:
Full-Time: This program runs from September through June. The course schedule is full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am – 3:00pm with two clinical day sessions per week.
Part-Time: This program runs from September through June for 20 months, 2 academic years. Classes are four days per week with one full day, 8:00am-3:00pm and three half days that are either 8:00am-11:00am or 12:00-3:00pm. The full day will turn into the part-time program's clinical day.
The Clinical calendar may be subject to change. This course is taught in English and on-campus. It is not an online course.
LICENSURE PREPARATION:
Orange-Ulster BOCES PN 10-month course prepares students for the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for the Professions) in New York State.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:
Federal Student Aid is available for eligible applicants. This program is approved for agency-funded financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, ACCES-VR, 1199 SEIU, CSEA, and HESC.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and a high school graduate. Transfer of college credits and college entrance scores are not accepted. College education from prior programs of study is not transferable. Each applicant is evaluated by the following criteria:

Please note: If you have any criminal charges, it is possible the state licensing board may not allow you to receive a license. Applicants with a criminal history will need to obtain a certificate of relief to accompany their NCLEX application.

Step 2: REGISTER FOR THE ATI TEAS EXAM AND PASS THE ENTRANCE EXAM
ATI TEAS:
Please note test can be scheduled no more than three weeks in advance.
All applicants are required to pass the ATI TEAS exam. The fee is $115 for testing.
INSTRUCTIONS TO REGISTER FOR A PROCTORED REMOTE EXAM THROUGH ATI:
- Go to https://www.atitesting.com/teas/register. A popup will ask you why you're on the site. Select "I am preparing for or taking the TEAS."
- You'll be redirected to a new page. Hit "Create an Account" in the upper right. Select Orange-Ulster BOCES for your institution when creating your account to have your results shared directly with us.
- Once you have created and signed into your account, select the Online Store option in the upper right.
- You'll be redirected to a new page. On the left side, there is a menu. Under "Register for..." Select the second option: “TEAS at ATI."
- Select the program type "ATI Remote Proctor- Nursing,"
- There are normally several pages of dates.
- Click "Learn More" to see the details for the remote testing site and the technical requirements required to take the test from home.
- Click "Register" to register for a specific date and time.
- The non-refundable fee for the TEAS is paid to ATI, by credit or debit at the time of registration.
All ATI TEAS exams are administered through remote proctoring and students must register for an exam in advance. Prospective PN students may decide to take their exam at home or utilize our Newburgh Learning Center computer lab to test if they prefer.
Our Newburgh Learning Center location offers test takers the technology they need within a quiet environment. The registration process is listed above. If you register online and plan to take your exam in our lab please call the Practical Nurse Program Office at 845-781-6715 Ext. 10800 to schedule.
N EXAM DAY:
Please arrive and/or log in by 8:45 a.m. Registered applicants must provide a copy of payment receipt and photo ID. Please carefully read the email instructions to prepare for the entrance exam.
The ATI TEAS is a timed exam that consists of four sections to evaluate basic knowledge. The four sections include: Reading Comprehension, Science, English and Math. There is an online calculator available when taking the math section of the exam.
PASSING SCORES:
Applicants are required to pass the exam on their test date. An overall score of BASIC must be achieved. Additionally the minimum score for the Reading Comprehension is 65% for those applying for the full-time program and 60% for those applying for the part-time program. If the applicant does not meet the required scores they are encouraged to remediate either through adult education literacy classes or through another remedial source such as ATI and retest. Applicants can take the exam twice for the program year in which they are applying for, and retests must be at least 30 days apart. ATI TEAS exam scores will expire one year after the exam date. Calculators, cell phone, tablets, and Chromebooks are not permitted; a web-based calculator is in the math test. A laptop or desktop computer with a web camera and internet service are required for remote online exams provided through ATI.

Upon receiving your passing results from the TEAS exam complete the application form and pay the $100.00 non-refundable application fee.

Step 3: PARTICIPATE IN AN INTERVIEW
After successfully passing the entrance exam, applicants are required to participate in an interview. The interview can be in-person or virtual, with the program coordinator.
To interview virtually using Google Meet, applicants must submit the following documents in a PDF format or send the documents through the US mail, photos are not allowed of any documents. To safeguard your documents in a Google shared drive and forward a share invite to (email address here) for access.

Missing documents will delay the admission process and the applicant may be placed on a wait list.
INTERVIEW APPOINTMENTS:
Interview dates may be subject to change and applicants will receive notification of appointment changes through email or phone. An applicant may change their interview date once with 24 hour advance notice. E-mail appointment changed to PN@ouboces.org.
INTERVIEW DATE:
Please arrive 10 minutes early for your interview. The interview session will take at least 30-40 minutes.
Step 4: ACCEPTANCE LETTER
Upon acceptance the $900.00 non-refundable registration Deposit is due
POST INTERVIEW:
After completing steps 1 through 3, applicants will receive an Acceptance Letter through email according to the scheduled dates of distribution. Applicants must carefully follow instructions and meet the deadline dates for admissions. Failure to meet these requirements may result in removing the applicant from the class roster.

- Complete a physical or submit a current physical that states the applicant can participate in the program without restrictions. (View/download the physical form).
- Return the medical form signed by the physician. Be sure the office stamps the physical form for verification.
- Pay the program fees on time.
FINANCIAL AID LETTER:
- All applicants must complete a FAFSA online to determine their financial aid eligibility.
- Be sure to list Orange-Ulster BOCES on the FAFSA application.
- The financial aid letter will be received after the acceptance letter and after the student has completed the online FAFSA form at: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
- Be sure to read the financial aid letter carefully for deadlines and requirements.
- Follow all instructions in the letter.

EARLY ADMISSIONS:
If you have been accepted into the practical nurse program during the period of March through June, you are expected to complete your paperwork no later than July 1. Failure to meet this deadline date, may put your application on hold and place you on a waiting list for the next available seat for this year’s class. Applications will not be carried over to the following year.

METHODS OF PAYMENT:
Applicants must secure financial aid or pay in full by the date indicated on the acceptance letter. Payments must be made by bank check, money order or credit card. No cash or personal checks are accepted. Orange-Ulster BOCES does not offer a payment plan.

Refund Policies
**Refund Policy for Students who Withdraw on or Before the First Day of Class:
If fees are collected in advance of the start date of class and the student decides to drop this program before the first day of class, Orange-Ulster BOCES will return what has been paid minus the non-refundable deposit and application fee. A student’s early withdrawal must be submitted in writing to the Practical Nurse Program office no later than the first day of class.
Tuition refunds, when due, will be made upon written request from the student. Administrative fees are not refundable.
The Federal Student Aid Title IV Refund Policy and Procedures will be followed as mandated by Federal Law. Contact the Practical Nurse Program Office at 845-781-6715 x10800 for further details of the refund policy of Federal Student Aid and R2T4 calculation.
Refund Policy:
A student who withdraws or is dismissed at any time during or after the first scheduled class meeting shall be entitled to a refund as provided below:
- Within the first week of the program, full refund of all tuition paid, less the non-refundable application fee and deposit.
- During the second week of the program, 70% refund of tuition, less the non-refundable application fee and deposit
- After the second week of the program, no refund will be made; student is responsible for any and all remaining tuition and fees
Refunds for Class Cancellation by Orange-Ulster BOCES
If tuition and fees are collected in advance of the start date of the Practical Nurse Program, and Orange-Ulster BOCES cancels the class, 100% of the tuition and fees collected in advance will be refunded. The refund shall be made within 45 days of the planned start date.
FEDERAL PELL GRANT AND FEDERAL DIRECT STUDENT LOANS
1. Gather Documents to Complete FAFSA:
You will need the following documents to complete your financial aid application:
- Your Social Security Number
- Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
2. Create a FSA ID:
Go to https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/account-info to create FSA ID and password. Retain this information for future reference.
3. Complete a Financial Aid Application:
Go to https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa or download myStudentAid Mobile App, available for iOS & Android devices.

How the IRS Data Retrieval Tool Works:
- Enter your FSA ID and Password and clinical link to IRS
- Your FAFSA will be saved, and you will be transferred to the IRS Web site
- On the IRS Web site, enter the requested information. Make sure you enter info EXACTLY as it would be on your tax return (example: if you filed as 2nd street don’t enter in Second Street).
- Once the IRS has validated your identification, your IRS tax information will display. You can either transfer your information from the IRS or choose to return to FAFSA on the Wed from the IRS Web site. If you do not transfer your information or choose not to return from the IRS Web site, you will have to login to open your saved FAFSA.
- If you transfer your IRS tax information, questions that are populated with tax information will be marked with “Transferred from the IRS.”
