Students work toward earning a traditional high school diploma and/or a Career Development and Occupational Studies Credential (CDOS).  Intense instructional support is provided in the small classroom setting as well as the additional support of an Alternative Learning Center. 

The program also assists students in developing social-emotional skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills.

Available for special education students who are at least 16 years old and whose shortage of high school credits makes it unlikely to achieve a high school diploma before turning 21. The program, which consists of two half-day sessions, is focused on preparing students to take and pass the GED exam.

The Middlehope Elementary Program mirrors the Liberty Elementary program and offers the same services to students in a standalone facility within the Marlboro School District. Providing instruction to students with behavioral, social and emotional needs, these classrooms offer a small learning environment that focuses on positive behavioral strategies and is designed to balance academic goals with behavioral needs to students whose success in prior settings has been limited.

Offers comprehensive services for students who are new to the country. The program emphasizes the development of social skills, familiarization with school routines, and understanding of educational expectations within an authentic experiential setting. This approach is designed to prepare students for the continuation of their academic careers in their home school districts. 
In addition, OUB offers a Newcomer GED program for students who are at least 16 years old and whose deficiency in high school credits makes them unlikely to achieve a high school diploma.

STRIVE is a highly-individualized, visually structured and supported language-based program serving the needs of children and young adults on the Autism Spectrum.  The main goals of the STRIVE program are to grow independence and flexibility, develop self-advocacy, and build social-emotional and employability skills to enable students to be productive and active members of the school community and beyond.

Transition planning is an important and coordinated process of guiding students with education, skill development, experiences, supports and services that will help them achieve positive outcomes beyond high school.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the elements of transition planning are written into every student's Individual Education Program (IEP), with adherence to the following:

OUB hosts a monthly Transition Council made up of schools, agencies, and community. This collaboration strives to create strong partnerships for students to successfully transition from school to adult life.

Annual Transition Fair

OUB hosts an annual Transition Fair at the Emanuel Axelrod Education Center,  53 Gibson Road in Goshen, N.Y.

Transition planning is key in determining successful postsecondary outcomes for students and their families. The Transition Resource Fair helps families prepare students to reach their best possible future outcomes.

STUDENTS AT WORK

The OUB School to Work program allows students to experience real world, hands-on job experience through on and off campus opportunities. It promotes important skill development and is part of transition planning to prepare them for life after school.

Shared staff

The OUB Board of Cooperative Educational Services provides an instructional service to the component districts through the use of shared teachers. This program provides teachers and administrators with support services, which enhance and upgrade educational programs. All services are operated in accordance with Education Law and Commissioners Regulations. OUB offers shared professional services in:

• Blind and Visually Impaired
• Deaf and Hearing Impaired
• Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
• Nurse Practitioner
• Speech

In a single district, the maximum share of a service is 60 percent of full time or three days per week. (There is no maximum share of service for Teachers of the Blind and Visually Impaired and English as a Second Language.) Each position is shared among two or more districts and is full time for the 10 month school year, unless otherwise identified.

Programs of service to pupils with limited English proficiency are eligible for LEP aid and are not eligible for BOCES aid. Programs of services to Blind and Visually Impaired students are eligible for excess cost aid and are not eligible for BOCES aid.

Cost Formula

Charges are based on FTEs. Costs of supervision, salary, fringe benefits, travel, staff development, and teacher supplies and materials (where applicable) are pooled and charged proportionately to each district based on the amount of service provided.

The OUB Diagnostic Center is comprised of several of our related service staff who complete evaluations for the following: Psycho-educational, Speech, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Vision Therapy, and Hearing Therapy. The diagnosticians work with school staff and families as they complete their thorough evaluations.
